For a Friend!

It is amazing the havoc one person can wreak on the lives of many.

I am reminded of the saying of John Dalberg-Acton who said Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority, still more when you superadd the tendency or the certainty of corruption by authority

Some people believe they can achieve wonders when they are powerful. However, when one's power is abused through personal agenda where one is hell-bent on tearing down traditions and culture which have taken years to mould and build, it is indeed sad to see how these are choked to death.

Imagine if you will, a majestic redwood tree. It is so huge and offers such cover for those who live in and around it. Such is the entity of a school. It offers sanctuary to those who seek knowledge and choose to better themselves. Those offering this knowledge do so in the hope that the students will be nurtured and moulded into wonderfully useful people who will ultimately make the nation proud.

Now picture this tree being strangled slowly by people who exact power in the wrong way. Instead of nurturing it with fertilisers, sunlight and water, she ties it a chain. The tree will suffer slowly but surely. Outwardly, it is nurtured but with the chain, it dies a slow death. My analogy describes what this powerful woman is trying to do or undo as the case may be. Slowly and silently, she undermines all the good that has been established, removing one by one, people who have done good, poisoning those who remain, degrading and demeaning their work to a point when all have lost hope and ultimately give up, only for the 'all-powerful' one to win.

The quiet nature to which this tree suffers added with the natural hope of mankind that 'it is so majestic, surely it won't die' will only cause more suffering as time is of the essence. Apathy is yet another killer.

I write this for my friend who is about to be victimised. She has breathed and lived this school so well that she is often accused of spending more time at work than at home, hence neglecting those close and dear to her. She about to be forcibly removed from a job and location which she loves to the core.

Why? All because that one person believes she has absolute power.

My friend, I pray that you will not be moved. I have been and it is no stroll in the park. The changes I have experienced and am still experiencing are indeed bitter-sweet. What I would give to have remained. Alas, it is too late. But not for you!

So stand strong! Stay there! DO NOT BE MOVED!
For He is our rock on which we stand!
